Fall 2024 Newsletter

Happy Fall from the Northern Arizona Climbers Coalition! If you haven’t noticed already — we have a shiny new website. We hope you’ll take the time to explore our work and learn more about our board members. The season has flown by for us as we’ve been working to fundraise, replace bolts, and host events to see our lovely community out and about.

We brought in another successful nesting season for raptors! Our multi-year partnership with the Forest Service has allowed us to have reduced closures and smoother climber/wildlife interactions. Because our “Coffee and Chat” at the Pit was so successful, we hosted a “Birds and Bubbles” event at the Peaks Crag in July. This continued outreach to climbers about closures and how to peacefully co-exist with birds has led to another successful nesting year.

This summer, local climber Brent Barghahn put on an engaging presentation about his experiences pushing the limits of rock climbing while inventing some unique tools along the way. Brent is the designer and owner of Avant Climbing Innovations, executive director of the Coco-op (local makerspace), and professional climber. Big shoutout to Wanderlust Brewing, who has been an awesome partner for our pint nights!

And in case you missed it, Kole DeCou did a hilarious and inspiring recount of his mission to climb all 263 (known) spires in Sedona (spoiler: he’s climbed 156 of them). Main Street Boulders was packed with folks stoked to hear about his adventures in the vortex. 🌀

If you want to stay in the know about upcoming events, follow us on Instagram and check out our events page. We host pint nights every couple months to meet other climbers and learn more about local issues, and organize several trail days/stewardship events per year.

Lastly, it’s giving season 🎄 Have YOU donated to your local climbing organization this year? The NAZCC is a 100% volunteer led effort. We rely on generous contributions from the community to sustain our stewardship work and rebolting efforts. Please consider donating to our work.

If you can’t contribute monetarily, consider donating your time! We are still accepting applications to fill two Board Member positions. This is a fully volunteer role with some perks, such as membership at Flagstaff Climbing, industry pro-deals, professional development opportunities, and more. If you have an interest in giving back to the community through advocacy, this is your time to step up! Application now closes November 17th.

Do you have ideas for events? Crags that could use some love? We want to hear from you! Get in touch with us at board@nazcc.org with questions and comments.
